Kieran Connell is a writer and historian from Birmingham, England.
He went to primary school in Balsall Heath, one of the most ethnically-diverse neighbourhoods in Britain. Kieran is the author of many articles and books, including Black Handsworth: Race in 1980s Britain (2019), which was shortlisted for the Whitfield Prize. His latest book, Multicultural Britain: A People’s History (2024), is an exploration of how Britain became the multicultural society it is today. It is available to pre-order here.
Kieran has published journalistic pieces in The Guardian, the New Statesman and elsewhere, and his research has been been discussed on BBC Radio 4, BBC television and on other platforms. In 2022, he co-researched and presented a three-part BBC podcast on the experiences of asylum seekers in Belfast. Kieran has also curated various exhibitions, including the 2016 Janet Mendelsohn: Varna Road at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham.
He lives and works in Belfast, where he is currently writing a history of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.
